Our Approach to Custom Woodworking

At Artisan Wood, each project begins with a consultation to understand the intended use, style preferences, and spatial context. We then develop detailed drawings and select appropriate wood species — considering grain, durability, and color. The build process involves traditional joinery, precise carving or shaping, and multiple stages of sanding. Finishing is applied using durable, food-safe or commercial-grade options depending on the piece. This structured method ensures every custom table, bar top, or panel is built with attention to structural integrity and aesthetic consistency.

Behind the Scenes: From Design to Finish

The journey of a custom wood piece involves several defined stages. It starts with a concept meeting where dimensions, wood species, and style are discussed. A detailed plan is created, followed by material procurement — selecting logs or boards with suitable grain patterns. Rough cutting, jointing, and planing bring the raw wood to dimension. Carving or routing adds decorative elements if required. Assembly uses traditional joinery methods such as mortise-and-tenon or dovetails. After assembly, the piece is sanded progressively to a smooth surface. The finishing stage applies oil, lacquer, or hard wax, chosen based on the piece's intended use and environment.

Materials and Techniques

Our workshop works with a variety of hardwoods and softwoods — oak, walnut, maple, cherry, and sometimes reclaimed timber. For carved panels, we use hand tools and CNC routing depending on the design complexity. Bar tops often require laminated sections for stability; wall panels may incorporate rustic or modern joinery. Finishing techniques include hand-rubbed oil, spray lacquer, and wax. Each method is selected after considering exposure to moisture, heat, or daily wear. The goal is to match the material and technique to the functional requirements of the project while respecting the natural character of the wood.

Customization Options

Every piece can be adapted in size, shape, wood species, and finish. Options include edge profiles, inlays, live edges, and integrated hardware. For bar tops, we can incorporate built-in drainage or custom lighting. Wall panels can be designed as modular systems or single statement pieces. These choices are discussed during the planning phase to align with the overall design vision and practical needs.
